Was God Lonely? - Chapter 1.3

So far we've discovered that God created the earth, and placed mankind upon it. And the story showcases that God created mankind intentionally and with a purpose. The Bible also reveals that part of Gods inspiration in creating us was to share in a relationship with us--which begs the question, WHY?

WHY WOULD GOD CREATE HUMANS?

WAS HE LONELY?

WHY WOULD HE WANT TO HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH US?

The act of creating something in order to have a relationship with it seems to suggest that God needed something. However, if we are letting the story tell itself, we realize that's not true. The Bible tells us that God doesn't need anything from us.

"...HUMAN HANDS CAN'T SERVE HIS NEEDS--FOR HE HAS NO NEEDS." Acts 17:25

So, if God didn't need anything from us, and really gains nothing out of our relationship, WHY DID HE CREATE US? IT WAS OUT OF HIS OVERFLOW & LOVE.

Let me explain it this way: Years ago I travelled down to Phoenix, Arizona, to visit my cousin. While I was there we got to talking about the Powerball lottery. At the time, the lottery was up to 1 Billion dollars. Yes, that's "illion" with a "B".

Talking about what he would do if he ever won, he told he would put some of his friends on a retainer and subsidize their income. Initially I thought 2 things...

1 - You're an idiot

2 - I hope I'm one of them

My cousin explained that he would want to do that in order to help free up his friends financially, so they could go and enjoy certain things together, like golfing somewhere tropical.

What I realized in that moment was this. My cousin was inviting his friends into something they could not access on their own. Out of his generosity and love for them, he would be creating a way for them to experience something they never would experience without him.

THEY WEREN'T BRINGING ANYTHING TO THE TABLE!

As harsh as it sounds, they weren't bringing anything to the table when it comes to the experiences he wanted to share with them. Their presence wasn't going to make the sun hotter, the beaches prettier, the golf courses more spectacular, or the accommodations more lavish. All of those things would always stay the same whether my cousin invited them or not.

He would always have access to those things. However, he was inviting them into something they couldn't access on their own. Out of the generosity of who he is, and the overflow of what he had.

This was God.

Not because of what He lacked. Not because we were bringing something to the table that was making something that was already there better. But out of the overflow of who HE is and what HE has, He created us to have relationship with Him.

IN COMPARISON TO TAPPING INTO A RICH COUSINS BILLIONS, THE STORY TELLS US THAT IT PALES IN COMPARISON TO THE LOVE THAT GOD CREATED US TO SHARE IN.

The story in the Bible kicks off by revealing with depth and detail just how important mankind is in the narrative. Created with love, intentionality, and for a purpose. And if all that's not good enough already, the story goes even further with what happens next.

God is about to take mankind and place them into a garden. A place that every single one of us has actually hungered for in our lives. No matter what you believe. Even if you think the Bible is a fairytale. The next part of this story represents a place that we all wish we could call home.
